Do you have any idea of a solar energy? According to Wikipedia, it is a radiant light and heat from the sun that has been harnessed by humans. What makes active solar energy different from passive solar energy system? Which do you think is better?
Active solar energy uses electrical or mechanical equipment such as pumps or fans to function well. It increases the heat used in a system. An example of this is the swimming pool heating system. It uses electric pumps to move the heated water from the coils directly to the pool. The use of diesel or gas is applicable to power up generators.
Some use motors to allow photovoltaic arrays to follow the movement of the sun in a day in order to know the amount of sunlight captured. Power grids are also considered to be active. They are connected with the electrical company as their backup source.
On the contrary, passive solar technology uses sunlight as its useful energy. It doesn’t need an active mechanical system to work well. You are not obliged to use fuel nor have utility costs. Many people would think that passive is higher than active.
Solar water heating is the most common solar passive program. It can supply enough hot water for washing and bathing purposes. It comprises of a collector tank which is placed on a south or west facing wall or on the roof. This is perfect in moderate climates where you can’t cool water in the storage tank.
It is possible to combine both active and passive solar energy systems. Systems that use electric motors can also use solar cells to supply electricity. Motors that have voltage can easily powered by solar cells. These solar cells can also power pumps that move water in swimming pool and water heating systems applied in buildings.
Active Solar electric systems need external generators as backups whereas passive solar system is also possible to stay green by using bio diesel as fuel for generators to function.
